I-DAIR’s Digital Health and AI Global Research Map (GRM)

On November 24th, 2021, I-DAIR will launch the Global Research Map (GRM) during a hybrid event at the Intercontinental in Geneva (on invitations) with open online participation. The event will include a demonstration of the GRM tool and its functionality to be followed by a panel discussion with representatives of I-DAIR partners and stakeholders on the added-value and potential applications of the GRM.

I-DAIR’s Digital Health and AI Global Research Map (GRM) is an interactive tool developed as a priority pathfinder over the past year to provide situational awareness of the Digital Health and AI research and development domains. Its main goals are increased visibility and understanding of current trends, identification of gaps in research and innovation, and fostering academic, governmental and private sector collaboration on AI and digital health. The GRM includes a powerful visualization tool that can generate a detailed landscape of research publications and patents for nine regions across the globe from 2011 to 2020.

Changes and trends can be visualized along with leading institutions and countries. The GRM is accompanied by a review of the maturity level of national DH strategies to allow an appreciation of the linkage between these strategies and national R&D outcomes. The tool categorizes countries with similar profiles into cluster ‘continents’ or a new world map of R&D and strategy in DH. This can foster sharing of policy best practices and cooperation on R&D among countries in the same or adjacent clusters.

The Map is based on an innovative methodology, which combines an AI-based technological approach to comb through open source patent and research publications data from 2011-2020 with curated qualitative surveys across nine regions of the globe. This digital plus analogue approach has helped I-DAIR generate digital health and AI R&D terms, trends, and trendsetters. A full taxonomy will be developed in the next phase.
